Mass demonstrations erupted in several Indonesian cities on Friday following the death of a ride-hailing driver under disputed circumstances, intensifying public anger toward the police.
According to protesters, the rallies were organized as an act of resistance against what they describe as police arrogance and brutality, following Thursday’s fatal incident involving an online taxi driver. Many participants accused authorities of endangering civilian lives and demanded accountability.
“This protest is a form of resistance against the police, who have tragically and arrogantly taken the life of a citizen without responsibility,” one demonstrator told reporters during the rally.
In Yogyakarta, the situation became particularly volatile. Eyewitnesses said police fired more than 10 rounds of tear gas into the crowd, further inflaming the already tense atmosphere. The heavy use of force triggered panic among demonstrators, with many dispersing while others pushed back, intensifying the standoff.
The protest reflect a broader frustration over police conduct in Indonesia, where accusations of excessive force and lack of accountability have repeatedly sparked public outcry. Civil society groups have long criticized the authorities for failing to curb abuses and ensure the protection of civilians during law enforcement operations.
As of this news was publicized, demonstrations was still going nationwide, reflecting widespread public anger over the death of the online taxi driver and broader concerns about police accountability in Indonesia.
